Good news for all regular cyclists. As part of the amending finance bill for 2022, an amendment was voted for an expansion of the conditions for obtaining "bike bonus" bonuses. Consequences: State aid for the purchase of an electric bike is increased from this Monday until December 31, 2022. Additional amounts are provided for people with disabilities or low incomes, according to a decree published last Saturday.
According to the decree, the "purchasers of cycles" and the "professionals of the automobile and cycles" are concerned. To put it simply, "any citizen can access it", according to Thibaut Quéré, head of advocacy at the Federation of Bicycle Users (FUB). "Before, the application of the bike bonus was subject to the payment of aid from local authorities, which led to the territories that had not yet put a bike policy in place," says the official.

The second novelty is the increase in aid for households with the lowest incomes, "who have a reference income per share of less than 6,300 euros," says Thibaut Quéré, as well as for people with disabilities. If you are in this case, the aid can reach 400 euros. Otherwise, the aid will increase from 200 to 300 euros.
If buying an electric bike was not in your plans, know that it will still be possible to benefit from subsidies for other types of bicycles. Folding bike, cargo bike and even bicycle trailer: the maximum bonus will increase to 2,000 euros for low-income households and people with disabilities. If you do not belong to this category, you will still be able to benefit from an aid of 1,000 euros.
For classic bicycles, only people with low incomes and disabilities will be able to receive assistance equivalent to 40% of the purchase price, or up to 150 euros. Finally, if they want to get rid of a polluting vehicle to buy an electric bike, the conversion premium can reach 3,000 euros. The amount will be 1,500 euros for the other beneficiaries.

Even if the FUB welcomes "a good start", Thibaut Quéré points out some shadows on the board. Four, more precisely. "The aid does not exceed 300-400 euros for the electric bike bonus," laments Thibaut Quéré first of all. The second negative point is the type of eligible bicycles. "These are only expensive and new electric bicycles, mechanical and reconditioned bicycles are not affected by the aid," according to the member of the federation.
Secondly, the latter believes that a "massive investment plan on the paths of the bicycle network" would be desirable in order to bring the necessary infrastructure to a wider use of bicycles. Finally, there is an uncertainty: that of the extension of these aids, which are currently only available until December 31, 2022.
