SHYNE Spanish hydrogen decarbonization consortium  - SHYNE is born, the largest consortium in Spain to promote renewable hydrogen and decarbonization with an investment of 3,230 million euros.

Led by Repsol, the SHYNE (Spanish Hydrogen Network) project has just been born, of which they assured in their presentation that it is “the largest renewable hydrogen consortium in Spain”.

It is made up of 33 entities from different sectors, which have the objective of” promoting renewable hydrogen projects in all areas of the Spanish economy and promoting a rapid and effective decarbonization through this energy vector, which is postulated as one of the keys to the energy transition".

SHYNE, they explained, aspires to be a reference project in Europe, backbone of new opportunities throughout the value chain, through collaboration between companies that pursue a common goal, the decarbonization of their activity, and that join efforts and investment to achieve it.

For this, the project has 6 partners promoters, in addition to Repsol: Alsa, Bosch, CELSA Group, Enagás, Scania and Talgo.

Will be a cumulative investment of 3.230 million euros, which will put in place various initiatives of production, distribution and use of renewable hydrogen in the industrial sector, transportation and other applications, as well as to develop ground-breaking technologies and accelerate this deployment plans of this gas. It is a project that as a whole expects to generate more than 13,000 jobs, they say.

Spain, according to Repsol in a press release, is in a privileged situation compared to other countries to capture the opportunity generated by the new renewable hydrogen economy, thanks to the great availability of solar and wind resources, as well as the ability of the industry itself to adapt to a new economy around the hydrogen value chain.

The SHYNE project aims to generate an ecosystem that connects the major regional initiatives around hydrogen that are already being launched, such as the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C), the Hydrogen Valley of Catalonia and the Hydrogen Valley of the Region of Murcia.

In addition, it will promote the creation of 2 new hub of innovation in Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid, Spain, whose aim will be the development of competitive technologies that are still in development, as the fotoelectrocatálisis or the electrolysis of oxides solid (SOEC) and that would keep the country a technological sovereignty in this new energy vector.

A knowledge management centre will also be created in Madrid, whose task will be to coordinate transversal actions, and which will position technology centres and universities as reference centres in Europe.

In this way, prepare “an efficient network that will capture the synergies between the poles producers, industrial centres, and other consumers of hydrogen, ensuring the competitiveness of renewable gas and avoiding transfer additional costs to end-users.”

The SHYNE project, they highlight “is perfectly aligned with the objectives set by both the European Union and the Government of Spain, through the Hydrogen Roadmap published in October 2020, which sets the goal of reaching 4 GW of capacity by 2030”.

For its part, “the Plan Spain Can support the creation of this type of pools, especially those that are multi-sectoral and inclusive of the entire value chain and to promote the public-private partnership and collaboration with small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as with research institutions to boost the hydrogen economy”, stand out.

In turn, SHYNE links perfectly with the Strategic Projects for the Recovery and Economic Transformation of Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen and Storage (PERTE ERHA) of the Recovery Plan Transformation and Resilience launched by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge last December 2021.

Renewable hydrogen, they stress “" is one of Repsol's pillars in its strategy to reach net zero emissions by 2050".

Renewables presented as SHYNE Spanish hydrogen decarbonization consortium

The company presented its renewable hydrogen strategy last October 2021, with which it intends to lead production in the Iberian Peninsula and play a leading role in Europe.

To do this, " it will use all available technologies and is developing, together with Enagás, photo electrocatalysis, a proprietary technology capable of producing hydrogen from water and sunlight”.

Repsol's industrial complexes, which are currently undergoing a transformation process to become multi-energy hubs, "are real nerve centres in renewable hydrogen initiatives and will play a key role in SHYNE".

In them, they detail, “the production and use of this gas will be combined to transform it into products with low, zero and even negative carbon footprint, such as sustainable fuels and materials for construction or health, among others".

The synergies between the companies that collaborate in SHYNE, they note, will favour coordinated industrial developments throughout the hydrogen value chain, maximizing investment capacity.

Comments on SHYNE Spanish hydrogen decarbonization consortium : “This premise will be key to achieving the decarbonisation of the most efficient and at the lowest cost, mainly in those sectors that do not have a solution in electrification, such as the steel sector in which it operates, CELSA Group, or in segments of transportation such as aviation and maritime transport, rail, or heavy-duty long-haul, with Iberia, Balearia, Talgo and Alsa as referents."

In this way,” the challenge of decarbonization becomes a great opportunity to generate wealth and technological and industrial development in Spain through this the new renewable hydrogen economy", they point out.

As partners of Repsol in the projects are the 11 associations, technological centres and universities, such as the Spanish Association of Hydrogen (AEH2), the National Centre of testing of Hydrogen Technologies and Fuel cells (CNH2), the Spanish Society of Ceramics and Glass, the Centro Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the Technological Center of Automotive Galicia (CTAG), the Foundation for the Development of New Hydrogen Technologies in Aragon (FHa), the Foundation Institute of Energy Research of Catalonia (IREC), TECNALIA and Cidetec, as well as the universities of Castilla-La Mancha and Alicante.

Complete this consortium of 22 companies from different sectors, such as Iberia and Balearia, regarding on air and maritime transport, respectively; the public company Navantia or PYMAR, the society that brings together small and medium-sized shipyards deprived of Spain; companies in the steel sector as Sidenor, AMES Group and Tubacex; Calvera, which designs and manufactures hydrogenase and systems for the storage and distribution of gases; companies producing electricity as BBE; engineering for electric mobility as a EPowerlabs; the company specialized in the transport of refrigerated Primafrio; the leading engineering in marine solutions Wartsila, and the technological Zigor, which develops power electronics systems, and Magrana, specialized in innovative solutions for the industry. Also, DYPAM, a spin-off of the University of Castilla-La Mancha focused on the design and processing of advanced materials.
