Santander already has a new CEO: Hector Grisi.
The Board of directors of Banco Santander has announced today that it has proposed Héctor Blas Grisillo, current CEO of Santander Mexico and responsible for the North America region, as group CEO and member of the board of the entity. Grisi will thus replace José Antonio Álvarez.
Santander has communicated this announcement to the CNMV before the market opening. An appointment that will take effect from January 1, 2023 and will be subject to the corresponding approvals.
Grisi will report directly to the board, in line with Santander's new management structure announced on February 24 of this year, as explained by the bank in the same statement, and will have under his responsibility all regions, countries and global businesses.

This proposal comes after a rigorous succession process conducted by the council's appointments committee.
This proposal comes 4 years after the frustrated appointment of Andrea Orcel, who came from UBS Group, and with which the entity ended up in court after withdrawing the signing offer due to disagreements regarding his salary. Now, the entity bets on someone from within the group.
Grisi will succeed José Antonio Álvarez, who joined the bank in 2002. In 2004, he was appointed chief financial officer and in 2015, CEO. After the transition period, Álvarez will continue the board of directors as non-executive vice president.
