The number of car sales July 2022 fell by 12.5%, although the registrations of electric vehicles grew by 30%.
The car industry is not raising its head. The month of July has followed in the wake of the previous months in terms of the fall in registrations of passenger cars and SUVs. In the month of June the fall was 7.8% compared to the same month last year, while in July the situation has worsened much more, with a decrease of 12.5%, with 73,378 units sold.
July had always been the month par excellence in the sale of vehicles. Before the holidays, users planned to buy a new car on these dates. In the same way, car rental companies were also strengthening their fleets with new acquisitions for the summer season.
However, according to El Confidencial, the market has been harmed by the instability marked by inflation and price increases, as well as by the shortage of semiconductors, which continues to hamper the arrival of new vehicles at dealerships.
Car sales July 2022
With this trajectory, and until the month of July, the sales of passenger cars and SUVs accumulate a fall of 11% compared to the same period of the previous year, with a total of 481,135 units. A figure that is even worse in light vehicles, whose drop is 17.9%, selling only 11,279 units.
Despite the drop in car sales to families, companies have achieved a positive result, with a growth of 2.7% and 31,035 registered units. In contrast, rental companies maintain the trend and fall by 38.9% compared to the same period last year.
Considering the accumulated of the year, the forecasts are even blacker. To date, only 68,138 cars have been registered, 33.1% less than in the same period of 2021, a rather bad year for the industry. In addition, so far this year, almost the same number of new cars have been sold as used cars with more than 15 years.
For Félix García, ANFAC's new director of communication and marketing, "the passenger car and SUV market continues to fall short of positive figures. A month like July, which historically used to show good behavior, has closed with a significant drop, aggravated everything with the sharp rise in inflation and energy prices, as well as consumer uncertainty due to some messages contrary to the use of private vehicles. These factors cause users to delay the acquisition and opt for a used vehicle. The latter is neither a benefit for road safety, nor does it contribute to the necessary decarbonization process."
Car sales July 2022 opinions
An opinion supported by Tania Puche, communication director of GANVAM. "We have to go to 2012 to see a month of July with a lower volume of registrations, which brings us back to figures from the economic crisis of that time. In addition to the lack of vehicles in the points of sale due to the chip crisis, runaway inflation is added that increasingly reduces the purchasing power of families and that will hamper the pace of market recovery in the coming months".
