With the entry into force of the new Rider Law, which establishes laborality between delivery companies and their deliverers, Glovo gave a twist to its labor model and continues to operate with freelancers. In this sense, the Catalan company announced that it would register in the Social Security to 2,000 delivery drivers, while 8,000 riders will continue to work as freelancers.

However, this new measure is fraught with controversy, since the delivery company has changed its working conditions in order to avoid the presumption of work of its riders. Among the new measures, as already explained, is the so-called” multiplier", which has sparked a wave of protests by unions and delivery people.

The multiplier works as follows: at a base price that is defined by the distance made, the waiting time and a series of “extra points”, another variable called “promotions” is multiplied (which can be, for example, a bonus for rain, which increases the price of the service). The result of this, in turn, is multiplied by a new parameter; a figure defined by the dealer called “multiplier”.

According to the company, this new system allows riders to set their own prices per order. However, from the unions they had been denouncing that it was a downward auction that would end with a depreciation of the income of the deliverers.

” If to access the orders they will have to devalue their average price or the initial price, then obviously the riders will lose out, " Carlos Gutiérrez, confederal secretary of Youth and New Realities of Work of CCOO, explained to this media.

This weekend, in Barcelona, dozens of Glovo deliverers demonstrated at the headquarters of the company to denounce the new order system, as they claimed it forced them to compete with each other.

In fact, after the implementation of this new system, spoken with several riders who say that many delivery people were putting the multiplier to 0.7, which automatically left them out of play because the algorithm assigned these workers most of the orders.

A Venezuelan rider from Glovo— who uses the bike to deliver and who prefers to keep anonymity -, assures that this new system is made so that" the company continues to earn more money " at the expense of the deliverers. "Now, for a journey of 13 km they pay around €6. I could set the multiplier to 10 if I wanted to, but then I wouldn't get orders. What we have to do is all agree and organize ourselves,” he says.

Just this morning, the CGT union announced that Glovo has already sent a message to the dealers in which it communicates its change in the multiplier system. Now, the company has eliminated the possibility of setting the multiplier below 1, and has set the maximum at 1.3 as it collected exclusively The Daily Jump.

At first, the company encouraged delivery people to put lower prices. The rider chooses, but remember that users value a service at a good price, " referring to customers wanting to pay the lowest possible price.

In recent hours the company has changed the latter and now establishes the following on its website of help to deliverers:

"How do I know what value to put on my multiplier? All dealers receive orders regardless of multiplier. The probability of receiving orders depends on the supply and demand of each moment, as well as other indicators such as distance and price.”

UGT in a statement denounced this new Glovo model and urged the Ministry of Labour to take action on the matter. “This model does not reinforce autonomous work, on the contrary, it reinforces precariousness and abuse to extremes not known in democracy, it reinforces the wild competition between delivery people who auction down their work. The Ministry of Labour cannot stand still, it must take the initiative and demand compliance with the law.”

According to the company, this model will provide greater " flexibility, autonomy and independence” and, although all the new features of the system have not yet been revealed, it will be implemented in the coming months.

"We believe that the chosen formula is the best option. We wanted it to be fair, but realistic, to ensure compliance with the law and that no dealer or establishment is left without service and without income”, recently assured the General Director of Glovo Spain, Diego Nouet Delgado Five Days.
