163 Spain bankers 375 million euros award salaries - a report by the European banking authority reveals the large salaries of a few in 2019

2020 and 2021 have not been great years for banks and their workers, affected as they have been by a pandemic that has left massive numbers in CaixaBank, Santander, BBVA, Sabadell, Unicaja and Liberbank, and merger processes that have caused staff adjustments.

Before COVID-19 appeared, however, there were 163 bankers in Spain who charged more than one million euros for their services and distributed about 375 million euros.

The European Banking Authority (EBA) has published a report that looks at bank office workers who have been paid over one million euros.

In the publication, the EBA reveals that Spain was in fifth place of the member states of the European Union with the highest number of millionaire bankers.

The data include the United Kingdom, at that time still within the group and in first position of the list with 3,619, followed by Germany, which had 492, France, 270, and Italy, 241.

Despite the prominent position of the United Kingdom, the report details that there was a relocation of people with high salaries who have changed the British isles for EU member states in the wake of Brexit.

In Europe as a whole, the number of large salaries increased in 2018 from 4,938 people to 4,963 people, a trend that was not followed in Spain, where the number of millionaires ' salaries fell slightly from 167 in 2018.

The total remuneration of the 163 lucky people with payrolls above the million in Spain in 2019 was about 375 million euros between fixed and variable, with payments of 87 million more that were deferred to later years, according to the EBA.

Even between the cream of the banking sector, however, there are abysmal differences.

In the lower zone of the classification there are 98 people who received between 1 and 2 million euros, 30 who received between 2 and 3 million, and 18 who received between 3 and 4 million euros.

In the upper zone, meanwhile, there are 2 people who received between 9 and 10 million, and a Leo Messi of the sector who pocketed between 12 and 13 million euros.

The EBA does not identify the individuals who have received these bonuses or the institutions that have paid such amounts, but it does separate remunerations between business areas.

In Spain, most of the high salaries, 51, come from investment banks, while commercial banks settle for 28 workers in the ranking. The person who received more than 10 million euros was part of the administrative committee, the report details.

'Back to school' rises: it will cost 387 euros on average, 1.86% more than in 2020

386.76 euros is the figure that will cost the return to school this year, 1.86% more than last year, when the bill amounted to 379.71 euros, according to IAhorro.

Uniforms and textbooks, generally more expensive products, are almost 2% higher (1.93% and 1.80%, respectively).

Thus, the suits will come out for 212.21 euros compared to the 208.24 that cost on average a year before.

The sale of uniforms, says Antonio Gallardo, financial expert in iAhorro, has become another form of income for schools.

In fact, if last year 39% of the subsidised and private centres analysed by our study only sold uniforms at their centre, this year this percentage has risen to 44%.

For its part, the books will cost 174.55 euros compared to 171.47 euros in 2020. The most important increase occurred in Infant (2.33%), followed by Primary (1.99%) and Secondary Education Oligataria (1.45%).

In this way, the average cost of children's books is 97.79 euros, Primary 178.05 euros and THAT 247.82 euros.

This variation in prices is justified by the fact that children's prices are the most susceptible to include new products or different formats –many materials are tokens.

In addition, they are more specialized and the materials are divided by quarters, which allows them to become more expensive, adds Gallardo.

In parallel, the digital book does not end up taking off in Spain. Its implementation is irregular, if in private centers it is close to 20% in the public analyzed barely reaches 4%.

IAhorro explains that tablets and computers require a high initial investment and at a time of uncertainty like the current one they do not find space for their implementation.
According to an analysis by communities, the most expensive is still the Valencian Community, with a total cost per student of 428.52 euros, followed by Catalonia with 420.07 euros and Navarre with 412.52 euros.

"Since we have been doing this study we have seen that in the autonomous communities with co-official language there is usually an extra cost in books with respect to those who do not have them," the report alleges.

In this way, among the cheapest stands Extremadura, with a price of 357.50 euros (19.8% less than the most expensive), followed by the Canary Islands, with 364.90 euros, and Castilla-La Mancha, with 367.85 euros.

Regarding the increases, these occur in Navarre (+3.48%), the Basque Country (+2.94%) and Andalusia (+2.65%). On the other hand, the Region of Murcia (+0.66%), La Rioja (+0.93%) and Castilla y León (+1.09%) are the lowest.
