Windows Terminal retro CRT style fun: The modernization of the command line interface in Windows 10 can also be nostalgic. A nod for Windows Terminal, the stable version 1.0 is approaching.

For users of the command line, Microsoft has undertaken work around the Windows Terminal application, in particular to give it a much more modern appearance and with new native features. This does not prevent a bit of nostalgia.

Windows Terminal will thus benefit this week from an update which is announced with the possibility of effects of a retro CRT style. This refers to an era of CRT CRT monitors.

An experimental functionality will allow this time travel with the discovery of a suitable interface.

Obviously, this is only a wink, even if it highlights the possibilities of personalization with the Windows Terminal application.

Other more serious novelties will be related to the search in the tabs of the terminal to find inputs and outputs of various commands, the resizing of the tabs, the possibility of defining a profile to open using custom key combinations, applying a single parameter to all profiles from the profiles.json file (settings).

For the moment, the Windows Terminal application - which is available from the Microsoft Store for Windows 10 - is still in preview. The next public preview will be stamped 0.8.

A stable version 1.0 should not be too long since it was originally mentioned for this winter. Recall that Windows Terminal offers a user interface taking advantage of faster text rendering with support for GPU acceleration, emojis, themes and therefore tabs with unlimited opening.

The tabs are connected to a shell or application of your choice. The Windows Terminal application offers an environment for PowerShell, Cmd (Command Prompt), Azure Cloud Shell, Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)… users.

With Windows Terminal, Microsoft is modernizing its command line interface in Windows 10. A preview is available in the Microsoft Store.

At its Build conference last May, Microsoft announced the arrival on Windows 10 of a new Windows Terminal application for users of the command line. It should dust the genre for the existing default on Windows.

Windows Terminal will thus offer a user interface taking advantage of faster text rendering with support for GPU acceleration, emojis, themes, tabs and several customization possibilities.

For example, it will be possible to open an unlimited number of tabs, each of which is connected to a shell or application of your choice.

The application will provide an environment for PowerShell, Cmd (Command Prompt) or Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) users, and more generally for all forms of command line application.

As expected, Windows Terminal makes its debut in June with availability in the Microsoft Store for Windows 10. Until now, developers could only compile the code on GitHub. For the time being, however, this is a preview.

The system requirements are Windows 10 version 18362 or higher, which corresponds to Windows 10 version 1903. Microsoft underlines the preliminary character of Windows Terminal at this stage, with improvements of functionalities and bug fixes which will be regularly distributed.

For customization and various parameters, it is also specified - for the moment - the use of a JSON file (profiles.json) to be modified manually. A stable version 1.0 of Windows Terminal is expected in the Microsoft Store for next winter.
