Uber has achieved a significant reduction in the fine of 59 million dollars, about 50 million euros, it received for refusing to share data on sexual assaults that have occurred in some of its transport services.

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) imposed the fine in December 2020 after Uber refused to release data related to more than 3,000 sexual assault cases that had occurred at some of its services during 2018.

A company report published in 2019 mentioned these sexual assault cases, but Uber did not at the time give the victims ' names or contact information to the CPUC when required to do so.

The report prepared by the company detailed the reporting of up to 464 cases of rape, more than 1,500 complaints for touching and more than 270 cases of attempted rape in Uber transportation services.

The file prepared by the CPUC and presented recently, shows that the commission in charge of the matter has reached a preliminary agreement with the company, which is required to pay a fine of 150,000 dollars, approximately 127,000 euros. In addition, following the settlement, Uber will also not be required to give the names of victims to the CPUC, but will provide anonymous data about the assaults.

In addition to the fine, Uber has agreed to donate $ 9 million (7.6 million euros) to the CPUC, of which $ 4 million will go to the California Victims Compensation Fund, a state-run organization that provides financial support to any victim of violent crime. Another $ 5 million of that $ 9 million donation will go to address sexual assault within the sector, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

In this regard, the CPUC has indicated that the commission will require similar data from other rideshare companies.

” We look forward to continuing to work with the commission to shed light on this social issue, and help set standards for safety and transparency in our industry, " Uber's chief legal officer Tony West said in a statement to Bloomberg.
