Second half change women Brownwood basketball: Second half change Abilene Wylie women's basketball to Brownwood.

Wylie's women's basketball team changed the game in the second half, dominating the final 16 minutes en route to a 46-34 victory against Brownwood on Friday afternoon.

The Lady Bulldogs went 28-15 at half time. They did not allow a point in the third quarter to recede within one before the fourth quarter. The Lady Lions scored their first second half points with a 1-2 run on the free-kick line early in the quarter, but Wylie responded immediately to tie the game at 29-all with 06:42. for playing.

Kenyah Maroney's basket with 06:21 left put the Lady Bulldogs forever. He sends them to the midfield on a high note after Friday's straight losses.

"It certainly makes the next five days of Christmas a lot more enjoyable," said Wylie coach Amy Powell. "I think, for those girls, what we said to them is, 'We know the team you are capable of when you play disciplined basketball.'

"We prefer not to start two quarters and be 13 points behind to get going, but we know when we can run and we can limit our ball losses and create easy opportunities, we can hang out with just about anyone. that we do very well, it can go downhill very fast. "

Brownwood took off the throttle in the second half and moved away from some of the things that had been working to build the 13-point lead in the first half.

"I thought we had stopped being aggressive," said Brownwood coach Heather Hohertz. "They increased their defensive pressure a bit and we got a little scared. We only had nine turnovers in the first half and we finished the game with 22 and only had one field goal in the second half. Can't win a lot of games when you only make a field goal. "

The first four points for the Lady Lions in the second half came from the free throw line in the last quarter. The only basket, made by McKenzie Welker, arrived in the last minute of play.

Forcing Brownwood to adapt is part of the Lady Bulldogs' halftime adjustment. And it worked.

"I really thought (Brownwood) shot the lights out of the ball in the first half and then we didn't execute," Powell said. "We put in a smaller lineup, but a faster lineup with three guards, which we haven't done much this year, to see if we can generate some easy baskets with our press."

As the Lady Lions turned the ball around and making bad decisions offensively, Wylie guards - Makinlee Bacon, Grace Steadman and Morgan Travis - put together one of their best performances.

"I thought some of our guards showed some real maturity," Powell said. "Especially down there for the last three minutes of the game. His basketball decision-making was kind of Achille's heel and I thought our guards really made some good decisions in the final stretch."

Wylie was led by Bailey Roberts with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Karis Christian had nine boards for his team, which totaled nine points. Steadman had eight and Maroney finished with six.

But getting Roberts in between is always part of Wylie's game plan.

"Bailey has been our bread and butter all season," said Powell. "We really need to do some perimeter shots to get things inside, which we couldn't do in the last two games. We did some perimeter shots, but we had the high and low stick with Karis and Bailey. When Bailey scores for us it certainly makes things a lot easier. "

Brownwood's Matyha Thompson had 10 points on the team and eight rebounds before failing with 03:24 remaining in the game.

The Lady Lions have challenged themselves this season with their schedule because of the approach. Brownwood recently dropped from the Class 4A standings, but is moving toward something once the drafting season arrives.

"The difficult schedule is due to who is in our district," Hohertz said. "Stephenville, Glen Rose, is in the top 15 in the state. So we have to have an extremely difficult schedule to prepare for them. Then, if we get to the playoffs, our first round is the Argyle district. Bridgeport. " .. They can re-establish their brains, re-establish their bodies for the next five days, and we can go back and build the first half we had. "
