Young people and women are the most affected by depression, experts say

Since mid-2019 she was diagnosed with depression and anxiety; and now he is under pharmacological treatment and therapy

Young people and women are the main groups affected by depression, and this is mainly due to biological, hormonal and psychosocial factors, experts on the subject from Mexico agreed.

In the framework of the World Day for the fight against Depression, which is commemorated on January 13, Dr. Martha Ontiveros, head of the specialization course in psychiatry at the National Institute of Psychiatry Ramón de la Fuente, said that for each man who suffers Depression there are two women with the condition.

This difference, he added, begins to appear since adolescence. In addition, biological, hormonal and psychosocial factors favor the appearance of depression in the female sex.

Physical and sexual abuse, as well as abuse, which is more frequent towards women, are also risk factors for this group.

Depression, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is a mental disorder that affects more than 300 million people in the world.

It is the leading cause of disability and contributes to the overall global burden of morbidity, in the most extreme case it can lead to suicide; and it is estimated that 800 thousand people worldwide commit suicide each year.

Although depression is treatable and can be prevented, there is still a stigma around this condition, which causes people who suffer from it to be undiagnosed and, consequently, do not receive treatment.

INDISPENSABLE HEALTH CARE

It took Lourdes García Flores more than four years to go to the psychiatrist. One of the main reasons for not receiving professional help was because "I was not crazy," he confessed to Efe.

The 59-year-old Mexican said that for many years she had fatalistic thoughts that caused her insomnia every night, as well as sadness, irritability and desire to cry.

“I thought I could heal myself, without help from a doctor. I refused to go to the specialist because they always tell you that the psychiatrist or the psychologist is for the "crazy", but fortunately I went and I have improved a lot, ”said García Flores.

Although he tried to get distracted at work and doing physical activity such as swimming and dance classes, he said that there were times when he wanted to run out of his house and could not look in the mirror because he was afraid.

Since mid-2019 she was diagnosed with depression and anxiety; and now he is under pharmacological treatment and therapy.

"Everyone who is depressed should go to the specialist because it is horrible to feel bad every day," he said.

Dr. José Javier Mendoza Velázquez, a psychiatrist and research coordinator of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM, indicated that there is a stigma associated with mental illness and suicide.

Alerted about the lack of attention that exists by the health authorities to attend the mental health of Mexicans, because of 100% of the budget allocated to health in Mexico, only 2% is for mental health.

Meanwhile, the specialist in psychiatry César Velasco Téllez, coordinator of Perinatal Mental Health of the National Institute of Perinatology Isidro Espinosa de los Reyes, explained what are the symptoms suffered by people with depression.

Among them, he highlighted the emotional discomfort, lack of energy that can be manifested in fatigue, demotivation for the activities that previously satisfied them, difficulty in starting the day's work and inability to enjoy things.

Other symptoms, Velasco Téllez explained, are difficulty sleeping, sadness, desire to cry, irritability (which is a symptom of depression that is almost never taken into account), appetite problems (whether they eat too much or stop eating eat).

In Mexico, according to figures from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), for every 100 inhabitants 15 suffer from depression, a disease that is not exclusive to adults since about six million children and adolescents between 12 and 22 years old suffer from it .
