Huawei and comes to request the registration of its operating system "Hongmeng" in Europe and in at least nine other countries, according to data from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). In the first quarter of 2019, before the US decision, Huawei sold more smartphones than Apple in Europe, with 13.5 million sales, according to IDC.

The Chinese group has not yet unveiled its operating system Hongmeng, but his application for registration shows that he wants to use it for devices ranging from smartphones to laptops through robots and TVs. The United States on May 16 banned the Chinese telecom group from buying products with at least 25% of components derived from American technology or materials. US sanctions prevent Huawei from working with Alphabet, the parent company of Google, whose Android operating system equips most smartphones, including those of the Chinese group. An executive from Huawei said the Chinese telecom group, the world's largest telecom equipment manufacturer and the world's second-largest smartphone maker, was preparing for the launch of its Hongmeng operating system. "We are excited to be part of the Android family, but Hongmeng is in the testing phase, mainly in China," said Andrew Williamson, vice president of public affairs and communications, in an interview since. Mexico City.

According to WIPO, a UN-dependent agency, Huawei has applied for registration of its Hongmeng brand in countries such as Cambodia, Canada, South Korea and New Zealand. An application was also filed in Peru on May 27, according to Indecopi, the Peruvian Competition Agency.

Huawei has a backup operating system in case it can no longer use software from the United States, said Richard Yu, general manager of the group's consumer division, in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt this year. The Hongmeng trademark was filed in China in August 2018 and received a license last month, according to a document on the website of the Chinese Intellectual Property Administration.

According to WIPO data, the first applications for registration outside China of the Hongmeng OS mark were filed on May 14 in South Korea and at the European Union Intellectual Property Office ( EUIPO), two days before the announcement of US sanctions.

Since the decision of the United States, Huawei has decided to stop some of its production of mobile phones, says the Hong Kong daily South China Morning Post. The information eventually filtered out of Taiwan's Foxconn assembly plants that reduced their supply of new notebooks for the brand.
