One dead, eight wounded, two of them with severe burns, and a missing person left an explosion and later fire on Tuesday in a chemical industry located in an industrial estate in Tarragona, Catalonia (northeast of Spain), regional authorities reported.

The head of Interior of Catalonia, Miquel Buch, confirmed "one dead and one disappeared by the explosion in La Canonja", said on Twitter the Ministry (regional ministry) of Catalan Interior.

So far the causes of the incident in the chemical company Iqoxe are unknown, but social networks shared videos that showed large flares from which smoke columns came out, and neighbors said they had heard a very loud detonation and felt how the windows of their houses.

A person died inside a building in a town near the industrial estate, which collapsed due to the blast of the explosion, Civil Protection reported.

The incident generated shortly before 7:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT) left eight affected, two with serious burns, and another six with milder wounds, emergency services said.

In addition, a person who worked in the company is missing, explained the Ministry of Interior.

The emergency services had activated after the explosion the "incident protocol with multiple victims", to take to the place specialized units in burns.

Firefighters indicated that about thirty endowments were working at the site to extinguish the fire coming out of an ethylene oxide tank and "cooling the neighboring tanks", while checking "the enclosure in case people were trapped."

"We remain very attentive to the information that comes to us about the fire," said the president of the government, Pedro Sánchez, who said he had spoken with the Catalan regional president, Quim Torra, "to offer the necessary support."
