The hypocenter of the shock was instead located at a depth of about 11 kilometers.

In addition to Cutigliano, within ten kilometers of the epicenter also the centers of Abetone, San Marcello Pistoiese and Piteglio, in the province of Pistoia, and the municipality of Fiumalbo, in the province of Modena. Ten other municipalities within a radius of twenty kilometers, including some in the Bolognese area. Although the earthquake was felt by the population, fortunately there are currently no injuries or damage to private buildings and public structures. The earthquake in Tuscany was preceded by a few minutes by another seismic event with an epicenter always in the same region but a few kilometers further south.

In addition to Bagni di Lucca, the towns of Piteglio, Villa Basilica and Borgo a Mozzano, also between the provinces of Pistoia and Lucca, within a radius of ten kilometers. Another 21 municipalities within a radius of twenty kilometers, including Cutigliano itself, the epicenter of the strongest shock.
