Colored worms, small baskets and miniature tecomates that hang from the hats allude to a crown won for the culmination of the pilgrimage, says Deyvid Molina, researcher of the Popular Religion area of ​​the Center for Studies of Cultures in Guatemala at the University from San Carlos (CECEG).

Molina says that human beings love sweets, and, therefore, these delicacies cannot be missed on this special date. The best known are the anicillos balls, the cocadas and the milk canillas, which come from the Chortí region and are of great attraction for the faithful Catholics of the world. The sweets are distinguished, in addition, because they are wrapped in cellophane paper, carry a religious print of the Black Christ or other saints, and are placed in colorful baskets.

The threads and fabrics are not far behind. According to the CECEG anthropologist, many people use rebozos from Totonicapán or güipiles from Quetzaltenango, to present themselves to the Lord: “Their colors are bright and they have some pompoms. Due to the geographical proximity, others are more similar to Mexican fabrics, with a white background ”.

Those who cannot travel to Chiquimula and return with one of these "souvenirs" should know that these can also be found in different temples in Guatemala. "Throughout the country there are churches that, with replicas of the Black Christ, celebrate the pilgrimage with the same devotion," says Molina. In the capital, for example, those of Esquipulitas (zone 11), Metropolitan Cathedral, Santa Teresa, Santa Catalina, San José and the Sanctuary of Guadalupe (zone 1) and Santa Marta (zone 3) stand out.
