The perpetrator of the arson attack on the Saint-Esprit church in Bayonne was arrested on Sunday 12 January 2020. He is believed to be a 23-year-old homeless young man who has been placed in a mental hospital.

The young man recognized the facts during his police custody, he was quickly arrested thanks to the video surveillance images of the city. We see him enter the place of worship and come out running shortly before the start of the fire.

"Voices" reportedly told him to set fire

The arsonist said he heard "voices" asking him to set the church on fire. He was placed in a mental hospital. The author of the fire has already been arrested for degrading acts, he is 23 years old and is said to have no fixed abode.

The fire would have been set in the confessional of the Holy Spirit church by the author of the arson, fortunately, firefighters who intervened not far from the place of worship, were able to intervene quickly to control the fire using fire extinguisher from the nearby restaurant and the train station while waiting for their colleagues to arrive.
